PPU Opens Pre-Registration for Participation in an International Course

The course will be taught by Sergio Pacheco, a leading Latin American scholar in the field of urban history.

The UEM/UEL Joint Graduate Program in Architecture and Urban Planning (PPU) has opened pre-registration to participate in the international course “Mexico City: Urban and Environmental History of a Latin American Capital (16th–21st Centuries),” offered in collaboration with the 19th Seminar on the History of the City and Urban Planning (SHCU), at the State University of Maringá (UEM).

The workshop will be taught in Spanish by Mexican professor Sergio Miranda Pacheco, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) and a leading figure in Latin America in the field of urban history. The researcher will also serve as an international visiting professor at PPU during his stay in Brazil.

Throughout the course, participants will have the opportunity to analyze the processes of formation, expansion, and transformation of Mexico City from the colonial period to the 21st century. The course will address topics related to urbanization, environmental issues, land management, and the main contributions of contemporary historiography regarding one of Latin America’s largest metropolises.

The course, which will be offered in a hybrid format, will take place from August 25 to September 25, combining remote and in-person activities. In-person classes will be held at UEM from September 8 to 11, during which time the visiting professor will be at the Maringá Campus for academic gatherings with students and researchers.

In addition to the international course, Pacheco will also participate in the 19th SHCU program. On September 15, the professor will deliver a lecture titled “El desierto lacustre: Una historia hidropolítica de la desecación de la Ciudad de México,” which will explore the historical and political processes related to the drainage of the lakes in Mexico City.

The opening of pre-registration for the course offered by the PPU is intended to gauge interest among potential participants. According to the organizers, information regarding enrollment and confirmation of spots will be sent to those who have pre-registered at a later date.
